You probably all know by know, that Wellingborough Centre had quite a few groups playing in the National Festival of Music for Youth regional auditions, with the large groups this weekend just gone, and the smaller groups last weekend.
I managed to get to see the Festival Band play the Lion King with the Afro Drums accompianing on bongos wearing masks made by the Art groups. They had the privilege of starting the session off, rehearsing at 8:30 and performing at 9:15! On Sunday!! It was a great performance, really filling the hall with the music. A great atmosphere.
Next was the Festival Orchestra, with music from the Phantom of the Opera. Again, an excellent, full orchestral sound. Also, a novelty, seeing Mrs Allen conduct with a baton! The ‘Phantom Theme’ was good and full every time it appeared, and there was some lovely quiet playing and key silences, especially the chords at the end (only broken, by Charlie’s ‘ba, ba, ba’ from the audience at the end).
The Junior Festival Band also played on Sunday morning, again doing Wellingborough Centre proud. They played two pieces of music, I didn’t catch the name of the first one, but the second was film/super hero music. Unforuntately, I wasn’t able to sit in to hear this one (I had to babysit), but through the PA I heard Superman and Austin Powers. Reports from those who did hear it all first hand, was that it was probably the best the band had played.
Well done to all performers and staff. Three excellent performances.
Kevin.
